Read the failed-test report first
Identify the items recorded as failures and ask the inspection centre about any unclear findings. Give the actual report to the repairer so the work addresses the recorded defects. A repair invoice is not a pass certificate.
Keep the original report, test reference and receipt. Before leaving the first centre, ask which branch can perform the retest, how the deadline is calculated and whether returning elsewhere changes the fee or test required.
Confirm the return conditions
Do not assume a free retest across the UAE. ADNOC publishes a paid first retest and a free second retest on its VIC service page. Shamil publishes a different Northern Emirates retest policy. These are operator statements, not a universal national rule.
The exact entitlement can depend on the initial test, time elapsed, vehicle class and centre. Get the conditions for your own certificate from the operator, especially where an older public page gives a different deadline.
Dubai appointments and disagreements
RTA’s current inspection page lists reinspection following a failed technical inspection among services exempt from a reservation. This does not establish the same rule in Sharjah or Abu Dhabi. Contact your chosen centre for its arrival procedure.
If you dispute a Dubai technical inspection result, RTA provides a Technical Inspection Committee appeal route through registration and inspection centres. Ask for that process instead of treating another test as an appeal.
After a successful retest
Check that the new result is recorded for the correct vehicle and registration purpose. Continue with registration only after the other requirements, including insurance and any account conditions, are satisfied.
If a vehicle cannot safely or lawfully be driven, arrange suitable transport to the repairer or testing centre. A retest visit is not permission to drive a vehicle with a serious defect.
Retest price and return window are separate questions
| Operator/authority | Published policy | Do not infer |
|---|---|---|
| Dubai RTA | Light vehicle, light bus or motorcycle retest: AED 50 plus AED 20 Knowledge and Innovation | A reservation exemption is not a free test. |
| ADNOC | First retest AED 50; second retest free | The VIC fee page does not establish a universal deadline or unlimited free returns. |
| Shamil Northern Emirates | Operator page states free return within 15 days, then AED 50 | Confirm the certificate-specific conditions; do not apply the Northern Emirates policy to Dubai. |

What to do before authorising repairs
Ask the inspector to explain each failure entry before leaving. Separate an actual failed item from an observation. Give the repairer the report rather than a verbal summary such as “it failed the brakes”.
Ask the original centre which branch may perform the return inspection, what reference it needs and how it calculates the deadline. The expiry of a pass certificate and the validity of a retest concession are different clocks.
- Retain the original report and payment reference.
- Have the recorded defects assessed and repaired by an appropriate workshop.
- Confirm return location, deadline and category with the original test issuer.
- After the retest, verify the result and then resume renewal.
Disagreement is an appeal, not a second opinion by default
In Dubai, an inspection centre can arrange the Technical Inspection Committee route. Bring the vehicle as instructed and attend yourself or through your legal representative. RTA describes a decision period of five working days. A test at another operator is not automatically an appeal.
If the vehicle is unsafe to drive, arrange appropriate transport. Do not treat an appointment or retest receipt as permission to drive an unsafe or unlawfully registered vehicle.

TAKE THIS WITH YOU
Before the return visit
A compact return checklist, not a test-result prediction. Tick locally and use your browser’s Print command if useful.
Print tip: choose “Print” in your browser, then paper or “Save as PDF”. This page includes a print layout.
Common questions
Is a retest always free?
No. Check the operator’s policy and the conditions attached to your failed-test report.
Must I book a Dubai failed-test reinspection?
RTA lists failed-test reinspection as an appointment exemption. Confirm the centre’s arrival procedure and your service type.
Can the second free ADNOC retest be used for a different vehicle?
The operator’s statement is about retesting after an inspection; it is not a transferable voucher. Ask the issuer about your original report and return conditions.
